Sunglasses are such a fashionable statement and status symbol that it may be easy to forget that they are zealously purported as one way to protect the eyes' from the UV radiation pulsing through the holes in our depleting ozone layer. It may be equally easy to forget that children, who are only smaller, more delicate versions of ourselves, also need protection from damaging UV radiation. Children's eyes are, in fact, more sensitive than ours, and so more susceptible to damage from UV rays. Consider that a child's eye lens transmits about 70% more light than an adult's lens.
What is more, children under the age of 10 are considered more vulnerable and there are some in the medical community who say that up to 80% of our lifetime exposure to UV radiation occurs before the age of 18.
But then, if you are a parent, you may have been hearing detractions from an altogether different faction of the scientific community, which is quoting the trends of children spending more time in front of TVs, computers, and video game sets than time outdoors. Some are concerned about the correlations between this trend and depression, ADD, and other behavioral problems. Then there's also Vitamin D deficiency, which is most often caused by too little sun exposure, and is believed to contribute to cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment, asthma in children, cancer, and other health conditions. And then, also, what of the effect on eyes from radiation from electronic media?
It becomes clear that allowing children to get outside often, as well as getting the right amount of sun, is good for their overall health. Yet, you want to strike a balance, and justly so. Teaching your children good protective habits, without hampering their natural development, is still essential. And teaching them the benefits of wearing sunglasses as one means of protection, is certainly more helpful than harmful.
As they participate in their vibrant outdoors games and adventures, you will want to make sure your children are wearing especially strong frames that are impact-resistant, and that perhaps have straps. Olympic Eyewear has a collection of kids sunglasses that are not only stylistically diverse but are made of extremely durable plastic, also a safer alternative to metal. All our kids sunglasses are manufactured with the standard UV400 protection. They are especially meant for children ages two and up.
Children are more likely to wear their sunglasses if they like them, and think they look "cool" enough, so Olympic Eyewear's kids collection features designer wholesale sunglasses that are miniature versions of some of the hottest adult styles. Our kids sunglasses are made by X-Loop Sunglasses, DG Sunglasses, and Locs Sunglasses among others.
