Here are some tips in how to take care of and maintain your favorite sunnies:
- Choose the best fit. Sunglasses don't come in a generic, one-size fits all package. It is best to get a pair that properly fits your face shape. If your face is too big for your selected pair, not only will the sunglasses feel uncomfortable, continuous use will distort the shape of the sunglasses. Take not of how the sunglasses feel. The pair should not have the bulk of its weight centered on only the temples or the nose guard. The weight should be uniformly distributed for a comfortable fit. Neither should the glasses feel too tight or squeeze, nor should it be falling off your face every time you move.
- Store them in their casing and/or microfiber bag. Avoid putting your sunglasses on your bag without putting them in their casing. The casing is especially designed to prevent damage. Unprotected, your pair can be vulnerable to scratches, cracks or distortion. Even if your lenses are scratch-resistant and impact-resistant, they can still be vulnerable to damage. The casing also makes your sunglasses easier to find (or harder to lose, as the case may be).
- Clean your sunnies regularly. Even if your lenses are water and sweat-resistant, you still need to clean them time and again. Sweat, moisture, dust and smudges can collect if left unchecked. Don't wipe the sunglasses when they are completely dry. Instead, use warm water to moisten the sunglasses with a bit of soap. Using your fingers, rub the soap into the frame and lenses in a gentle motion. Then, rinse the pair with warm water. Let them out to dry or use a microfiber or lint-free cloth to wipe the unit dry. Don't use tissue or other paper products, because these cause minute scratching on the lenses. Another alternative is to use a microfiber cloth and eyeglass cleaning spray.
- Store your pair in the proper place. Keep your sunglasses away from children and pets. Remember to put your sunglasses away, rather than leaving them exposed (such as on your car's dashboard) where heat can leave them distorted. Never lay your sunglasses lenses down on hard or rough surfaces.
- Make like David Caruso. Remember Horatio Caine in CSI: Miami? Caine would remove his sunglasses the two-handed way, after which he will deliver a pithy comment. Likewise, don't use just one hand to put on or remove the sunglasses. Also, carefully handle the sunglasses. Don't hold the unit by just one arm piece or bend the frame.
- Tighten the frame screws. Over time, the screws and bolts that hold the arm pieces will loosen. Check these regularly and tighten as necessary (but not too tight!).
