The Benefit of Sunglasses
Skin cancer is among the most common forms of cancer in the U.S. Nearly 10-percent of skin cancer occurs on the eyelids, which is why it is so important to protect this delicate area.
Sunglasses help to block dangerous UV light that penetrates the eyes and the skin around the eyes.
How does UV light affect the eyes?
There are three different types of UV radiation emitted by the sun.
- UVA Rays – These pass through the Earth's atmosphere and reach the surface of the Earth.
- UVB Rays – These rays are partially absorbed by the Earth's atmosphere.
- UVC Rays – This type of ray is completely absorbed by the Earth's atmosphere.
UV Light and the Delicate Skin around the Eyes
It is important to protect the skin around the eyes, as this thin layer of skin is very delicate. Nearly 90-percent of the signs of premature aging are caused by UV damage around the eyes.
Skin changes in this area include mottling, discoloration, brown sun spots, loss of collagen and elasticity, wrinkles, dehydration and leathery looking skin. Fortunately, there are ways to help protect the skin and eyes.
How to Protect the Skin and Eyes from UV Light
UV light is present in cloudy weather, rain and sun and even reflects off surfaces, such as buildings, snow, sand and water.
To help shield eyes from UV rays, it is important to wear sunglasses that offer the following:
- 100% protection from both UVA and UVB rays on the front and backside of lenses.
- Close-fitting, large wraparound frames that help provide greater skin protection.
- Polarized lenses help minimize glare off reflective surfaces, which helps prevent squinting.
