Here are some things to consider when choosing your sunglasses:
Choose your frame. When choosing your frame, consider what would best suit the shape of your face. It will fit any of these seven shapes – triangle, inverted triangle, oval, round, oblong, square or diamond. Then, select a frame that accentuates the shape of your face. Here are some suggested frames for the various face shapes.
- Triangle: Frames that have straight lines at the top
- Inverted triangle: Frames without rims
- Oval: Squarish frames
- Round: Squarish or rectangular frames
- Oblong: Squarish frames that are wider than your cheekbones
- Square: Thin frames that are round or oval in shape
- Diamond: Frames without rims or ovoid frames
Choose your lens material. Lenses may be made of glass, polycarbonate, acrylic or polyurethane.
- Glass lenses are heavier but are scratch-resistant and provide clearer views.
- Polycarbonate lenses are suitable for high-impact activities and are lightweight. However, they are prone to scratches and provide less optical clarity.
- Acrylic lenses are colorful and inexpensive but are less durable and may cause images to be a bit distorted.
- Polyurethane lenses are durable and flexible but can cost more.
- Gray lenses. No color distortion and reduces overall brightness. Best for moderate to bright light and for everyday wear.
- Orange or yellow lenses. Provides sharper views and better depth perception by filtering blue light. Best for low to moderate light. Works best for snow sports such as snowboarding or skiing, as well as indoor sports such as shooting, racquetball or indoor basketball.
- Amber or rose lenses. Provides stronger contrasts and brighter views but may result in significant color distortion. These provide greater visibility in green or blue backgrounds. Best for low-light conditions. Ideal for driving or cycling in forested areas, trekking, hunting or shooting.
- Brown or copper lenses. Provides increased contrast and depth perception by filtering blue light. Best for low light conditions and changeable weather patterns. Ideal for golf, skiing, fishing, cycling and baseball.
- Polarized filter. This minimizes reflected light or glare for more comfort and clarity.
- Mirrored coating. This minimizes the penetration of light but reflecting it.
- Anti-scratch coating. This prevents scratching, particularly if worn by those with an active lifestyle. Lenses that are particular vulnerable to scratching include high index plastic lenses and polycarbonate lenses.
- Hydrophobic coating. This repels water.
- Anti-fog coating. This prevents fogging during high-energy sports and humid weather.
